Why does the grand jury system exist?

how do twelve untrained people, each with personal flaws and traits, possibly bias, deciding some of the most important cases? isn't it take long, hard study to become an attorney? and even longer to become judge? so why do we trust 12 regular-joe to decide one's fate? why can't we leave it to the judge? shouldn't it be better to leave it to the pros?
i mean if you have to go to a hospital for a life threatening operation, wouldn't you want sergent to do the job?? not 12 people selected randomly?

A grand jury decides whether or not there is enough evidence to go to trial. A petit jury hears the evidence and the arguments from opposing lawyers and decides a verdict.

The jury is supposed to - based on the evidence presented and the arguments put forth - to make a rational, impartial decision. It serves to find facts, while the judge interprets law and instructs the jury regarding it, and the lawyers twist it.

Sometimes the laws are unfair and without a jury that sees that, a person could wrongfully go to jail, whether or not the evidence supports a person's guilt.
