Where can I find someone to represent my child?

My son was givin a detention for an environmental shirt stating, turn me off , preserve water, with a faucet above it, it was a Timberland brand clothing and I have documentation that it is a strictly environmental shirt . the schoool wil not revoke the detention stating the shirt has a sexual meaning. I live inNOrtheast PA, where do I even start, what type of advocacy or environmenatl groups can i contact to help me and my son?

While I know some people are saying don't worry about it, I believe you should worry about it from several aspects:

1) Just because someone in authority says something is wrong doesn't mean it is wrong. People need to stand up for their rights and also take responsibility for their actions.

2) The school can use this detention in the future should something else come up as justification for harsher action.

3) Accepting this teaches your Son to accept the situation and not stand up for his or anyone else's rights.

School is there to teach your Son. You're there to help make sure it is the correct lesson. So far, I'd say you're doing a great job as a Mother.

As for where else to go besides the ACLU and your own lawyer.

How about the Timberland Clothing company. As it is their clothing they might have an interest in it. Also the PR aspect might be good for them as getting the T-Shirt on the local news would help the company.

Another place are any environmental groups.

Another area to contact is the local media, such as TV, Radio, and Newspapers. Are there any local commentators who are environmental or child rights advocates?

Again, I'm proud of your wanting to protect your child's future both his record and his attitude in standing up for himself and others.

Good for you! Good luck and best wishes. Report Abuse

Take it up with an attorney!! All the shirt is saying is TURN THE DAMN TAPS OFF WHEN NOT IN USE!! What's the matter with this school!? They must have dirty minds! Shows you where THEY are coming from! The gutter! Whatever happened to Freedom of speech and Freedom of the Press? It's PRINTED on the shirt, so as far as I am concerned it falls under the latter category!! I would certainly take this matter further, it's ok saying "it's just detention", Bull! They WILL revoke the detention if you take this to the Media!!! I would make them eat crow! Good luck and God Bless!

How in the heck do they get a sexual meaning out of "turn off the water faucet"?! Those are some sick SOBs who probably shouldn't be teaching children.

Yeah, I'd contact the Superintendent of the school district first. Call and see if you can speak with him or her. Ask to be placed on the agenda at the next board meeting. Bring your son. Wearing the shirt. Ask them to explain themselves.

Bonus: the local media will probably be there. That'd be my next step: every local paper, radio commentator, and local news program who will listen.

Schools can be very adamant now a days and for the most part you can't blame them, schools are over crowded and the school systems do not receive enough money from the government.

That being said contact the ACLU and they might be willing to get involved. Check out the website below, there is a link to contact them.

Mom, I do believe you are over acting here. An hour or so from your son's life is not going to kill him.

Save your fights for the big ones out there.

If the school says no to this shirt, simply to not allow him to wear it again.

It's JUST a detention.

It's not like the kid is going to prison or anything. Just tell him although you do agree with his feelings (If you do), just don't wear the shirt to school anymore.

Contact the Superintendent of the school district.
