Did the Telecommunications Act of 1996 actually explicitly state that no broadcaster can own more than 65 radio stations at one time, or is this some strange statistic that people use out of context? I heard that the statement is true while researching payola in radio, and I believe the source might have been the L.A. times, although I'm not sure. The act actually specifically removes any limit on the number of radio stations a company can own nationally and limits local ownership to between 5 and 8 radio stations, depending on the number of stations in the market. See Sec. 202 of the act. You're a nerd. We need more people like you in this country. clear channel owns thousands of stations. |
