Since sharing isn't a crime, why are they trying to criminalize file sharing & scare people too death?

Stealing is stealing, I agree.

Stealing is when you take something you have not paid for, from a store shelf, a CD or DVD.

But I am sick of them lying about sharing! Piracy is stealing, yes, that is wrong. But what they are failing to tell you is that SHARING IS NOT STEALING, sharing is sharing.

I buy a disk, I got a right to share. I know, I know, the artist wants to make a million dollars, & yeah, I want a condo on the moon.

Why do I get the feeling that they are trying to base what is right or wrong on whether something makes money, rather than on what is MORALLY right to do?

Isn't the love of money the root of all these evil schemes?

Besides, by destroying legit purchases with draconian Digital Rights Management tech, to the point of IT NOT WORKING, they are only asking for legit customers to go to file trading buddies for help cracking it so they can finally use it.

What the? Have we really come to call sharing stealing?

I can't believe it, can you?

Oh yeah, & for poster 1, saying since I like sharing then why not share my bank account details, have you got a brain, LOL, I mean, you share food with your friends, you share money, some things you don't share. Period.

Music is fine, so is money, so is anything else you own. Personal info, no no, because of trust issues.

What the first guy said.

Stealing is stealing. Its not sharing when you have one copy, then make another copy. Thats stealing. Sharing is you have one copy, and give that ONE copy to a friend. See the difference?

edit:

Ok, after reading your responses I have one for you. Why is it stealing? Because when you bought it in the first place the rules of law SAY its stealing. Like it or not, that is the law. If you don't agree with it, DON'T BUY THE MUSIC IN THE FIRST PLACE! If you do buy it and let others make copies, then its stealing. Simple enough for you?

If you buy a disc, you have the right to share the disc, not what is on the disc.

That is, you own the physical media, and you can loan it to a friend or sell it. But what's on the disc -- music, movies, software, whatever -- belongs to the people who own the copyright.

Sharing the contents of a disc without the permission of the copyright holder is a crime. You can go to prison.

If you friends steals 2 DVD's and gives you one and you know it is stolen. It is the same as stealing.

You need to get some moral direction. What you are doing is wrong and illegal. You are stealing the food out of the artist children's mouths.

Get a job and pay for your music. If everyone was w/o morals was like you, there would be no CD's or DVD's.

There's nothing wrong with sharing (e.g: my mate borrows a DVD off me), but it is piracy to create another (unlicensed, and therefore, illegal) copy, which is what happens when someone downloads it from a torrent site or limewire or whatever. It harms the developer as they do not have as much income if people can get it for free.

Since you are so into "sharing" please give me your bank name, account number and PIN, I would like to share some of your savings account.

Yes, I can believe it. Someone took the time to write the music, come up with lyrics to go with the music, spent hours and hours rehearsing, and more hours recording it. Do you think they do all this to just have their intellectual property given away for nothing?

You buy a CD or DVD at the store, you own the physical media, but not the contents. You can do whatever you want with the media. You cannot do whatever you want with the contents of the media, though, since you don't own that.

*EDIT* - Your confusing TRADEMARK with COPYRIGHT. As it is now, if someone names a car "Mustang", you cannot use that name on another car. This falls under TRADEMARK.

Intellectual property, on the other hand, is what you are referring to with file sharing of music. This falls under COPYRIGHT laws.

Apple and oranges, dude.

So called 'sharing' is stealing. How can you seriously suggest it isn't?

If I buy a book, and make a copy, is that stealing? Of course it is. You are giving someone (and it's not really giving, because you expect something: other downloads, in return) something you do not have the right to give, namely the product of someone else's labour. How much they make or how rish they are is irrelevent.

Think of it this way. Let's say you are an artist, you paint pictures. And you paint a nice picture other people want. Would you consider it okay for some sweat shop in China to copy hundreds of copies of your image and sell them? I think not.

By the way, your criticism of billyboys answer is laughable. People naming items in the world, first of all, usually occurred hundreds, even thousands of years ago. There is no similarity to the subject at hand, nor are your thoughts copyright, that only occurs to written or recorded works that are original. So I cannot copyright the sound of a guitar, but I can copyright the exact sequence and number of notes which produce my song (provided nobody beat me to it).
