I live in Georgia, and I was wondering what are the specific steps needed to obtain a tax exempt status for my nonprofit organization

Well, you probably need to find which branch of Georgia's government is responsible for certifying nonprofit organizations, possibly the Georgie Department of State. As well, you'll probably need to visit the IRS website, as the federal standards and requirements for establishing a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization are to be found there.

There are a number of books that you should be able to take out of your library on the steps to incorporate a non-profit, though consulting with an attorney is the best option, obviously.
