What specifically does the term "Taxation Without Representation" mean in ref to DC residents? |
I just recently moved to the DC area. Actually they don't have REAL representation in the House either. They have a non-voting representative. Meaning that the person can suggest bills or talk but can't vote on them. Commonwealth really doesn't mean much anymore. I live in Pennsylvania and we are a Commonwealth. Basically all it means in the U.S. States though is that instead of legally talking about the State of we use the term the Commonwealth of. Basically an official title but nothing else now. The idea came that they were worried about the Common Good of the people. I think they lost most of their power under the Constitution. It means the residents pay Federal taxes yet have no representation in the Senate, just one Representative in the House. |
