If my ex hus is currently paying 600.00 a month in child support can I ask for increase if he makes 80,000?

teenage son....demanding alot of money for sports.....single mom in need of more help

Your teenage son is "DEMANDING" money for sports?
Child support is supposed to pay for NECCESSITIES.

Stop trying to leech off your ex, thats ****** up.

And if my kid was demanding money i'd give him the belt.

Child support formulas are usually already set, taking into account how much both of you make and how many children are involved. You can ask for a review every so often. (Depends on your state law.) However, depending on your situation, you might actually get less.

There is no hard and fast rule but of course you can ask for a reveiw. But $600 on 80K sounds about right. After taxes, fica, health and all of that it will be substantially less.

Bear in mind though when you ask for an increase. The judge will be considering that support is for food, shelter & clothing. He will ask you if he has all of that and apply whatever formula and determine your ex's share of this.

Participating in expensive sports and incurring that extra expense is you and your sons business. It would be the same as if your son had an expensive car and needed more money for car insurance. You decided to incur the extra expense.

Sure it would be nice if your ex voluteerer to help out more. But trying to up the support legally will probably not work out and end up costing you. My brother's ex tried that and they dropped the support down. I'm not sure but I think it had something to do with the child being older.

I don't know your situation but I agree with the others. Demanding and the I have to have attitude is bull. Let me guess...... he has to have a PSP, Xbox, games, an Ipod, the great cell phone and all of that.

Sports are fine but he needs to learn balance. Learning the value of money by earning it and school are the secrets of success. Blowing cash on sports are not.

Son needs to get a summer job and save his money for sports
teaches him responsibility.

Don't be after his money. Do you know what your son needs the most ????? His DAD.

I don't know your situation, neither want to be judgmental. you may be right or wrong I don't care.

But I do care parents for their selfish motives get separated and divorced and the poor children have to suffer.

Your son needs to demand his butt to work.

You can ask for anything you want... it's up to the judge. How old is the teenage son? $200 more a month until he turns 18 could be a lot cheaper then getting more lawyers and fighting it out on both sides since he'll probably loose anyway. Have a frank talk with him and run it by him that way. If he agrees you will still need to have the order modified to reflect the new amount but you don't have to get lawyers involved then.

While I agree that it is well advized to have your teenage son get a part-time job to help with some of his expenses...and to learn how to manage money. It is important that he learn to set up a portion of all monies he receives thru work and by way of gifts to pay himself first....put a defined % into a personal saving acct. He needs to spend and save and see how quickly money goes...and how hard people are working to earn a living and make things possible for him. I applaud you for giving your teenage son the opportunity to grow, to experience life...it will give him more confidence when he is out on his own...it will help him make choices for his future. Divorce is hard enough...give him all you can...teach him to be respectful....to give as well as take...I'm confident he will grow up to be an upstanding citizen for being given opportunities and lots of love. I think it would be a very good idea to talk with the father to increase the child support. A caring father would want his son to have every opportunity to succeed in his life.

Yes. See a lawyer.

If you are paying an unfair proportion to support your son, then I say ask for more child support. If $600 a month is all the dad pays (no tuition, insurance, etc) and he makes 80K a year, you have a good chance the family court will increase the amount (especially if you can prove the cost of raising your son). And, oh yeah, get an attorney. Best to spend a little and get it right then a lot and get it wrong.
