In the United States, Is online sports gambling illegal?

Could someone be put in prison for gambling online and betting on sports on offshore websites?

What are the chances of a law enforcement official breaking down someones door on this issue?

yes.

Depends; are you feeling lucky?

It is not illegal for a player in the U.S. to gamble online, but the law that was passed stopped U.S. banking institutions from allowing money to be transferred from the U.S. bank to the offshore sites. They have come up with ways to get around this, millions of americans wager online everyday. The sites listed on http://www.printyourbrackets.com/sportsb... all allow U.S. players to gamble online.

It is illegal, but they haven't been able to come up with a way to stop it. The only way it can be stopped is if the company itself will not allow american players to bet. The government has tried to stop online gambling with the poker sites, but failed. The only Poker site that will not allow american players is Party Poker, which is a India based company.
