Sexual Harassment is the initiation of unwelcome social advances, requests for sexual favors, or the creation of an overtly hostile environment (such as pornographic pin ups in public areas). Sexual Harassment is a category of Sexual Discrimination. In some settings, you can sue for sexual discrimination; in other settings you can't unless it rises to the level of harassment; and sometimes not even then. If a guy makes a pass in a bar known for its singles action, it's not harassment; even if he's persistent, it's not harassment until and unless he crosses a line. Where that line is located is sometimes fuzzy.

In other words, the concept of "sexual harassment" does not exist in isolation from the context. What's offensive in one context is endearing and sweet in another.

Someone who is constantly making sexual comments or touching you in ways that are totally inappropriate. Many times people are told if they don't do "certain things" they could lose their job. And if a person refuses to play the "games" and are let go, a person can file discrimination.

Main thing is to make sure you document everything that happens by keeping a thorough record. Those things can help your case alot if you need them later. Get a calendar and record things as they occur and don't try to go back and fill everything in later. They look at the handwriting and pen(s) used to document things as they happen.

I had a Sgt I worked with several years ago who called me back to his office. I thought he was upset over something I had done but instead, he proceeds to show me this Bible he had told me about. I carried my Bible and workbook to work regularly and studied on my lunch hour, thus the Bible discussions.

I looked at the Bible and made some comment or other and then waited to see what else he had to say. He sat there looking at me which made me very uneasy so I finally asked him if there was a problem with my work or something and he said no. Then he had the nerve, while I'm holding the Bible, to ask me if I fooled around. I looked him square in the eye and told him "NO, adultery is wrong".

This guy was newly married for the second time to a woman about 20 years younger than himself and now he's looking to have an affair with me? I got up and handed him the Bible and left his office.

Then about a week later, we were in the big office where all the files were and where a bunch of people worked and as I'm looking through a file for a report, he walks up behind me and whispers, "You sure you don't fool around?". I said no and went on with what I was doing and he finally walked away.

He never approached me again but I heard through the grapevine about a couple of other women who had an affair with him and I believe it. The one woman worked third shift and when she got off, she sat on a bench in the hall waiting for him to arrive an hour later. She would then go into his office and they would share coffee (same cup) and laugh over things and many times he closed the door during these visits.

Then he had the nerve to put a memo out to everyone that we were not to gossip. My comment was "don't do things that might cause gossip". His second wife finally divorced him because of his adultery and he is now married for a third time.

Personally, he is one big loser all the way around.

sexual harassment can be ANY touching-shoulder hand-anything as long as it makes you uncomfortable-just tell the person
as far as consequences-depending on what is done-it can go from the boss calling him/her in and saying "she's just a troublemaker-don't go near her" to suspension without pay to termination. anything more than that is really really rare. again, it depends on what is being done if it's overt physical/verbal and not just friendly then they will usually get a verbal reprimand the first time. and they will, probably still be the same place they were.
