Directtv wants my social security number before I can buy their tv packages, Should I give it to them? |
They claim it's for checking my credit. I work for a major telecommunications company. Cable/dish is considered a utility, so they have a right to do a credit check. Cable companies will charge double deposit without a ssn provided, dish companies usually charge a very, very hefty deposit,(200.00-400.00) and credit card billing (automatic billing to a card) without a SSN. They want it for a credit check, you have the option not to give it to them, but then they will get you with a $300 charge for installation. I know cause I already been through this with them. I finally let them run credit, and have had no problems with them misusing my information. They don't need your social security to get you to buy their cable package. With our package with our cable co. we used my husbands S.S. number. They use it to keep your information locked down. Then when you call for help or repair, the will ask for the primary(whos name is on the bill) last 4 numbers of the S.S. number, then they can open your file. So its for your own good. nobody needs your security number for you to purchase a t.v. package. The only valid for that info, is to do a credit check. I would never reveal that info w/o researching the company further. I wouldn't. However it may be for a credit report. Ask why they want it and make your decision from there. Only correct answer: if you want their service, give them the information. if you don't, then don't. If it's for a credit check, I don't see how you can get around it. |
