Why is access to private patient records,so restricted in hospitals, but not in doctors offices?

If anyone knows, can you please explain this. in the hospital, you must "break the glass" to access the charts for patients and you must provide direct care for the patient to access the chart, yet, for the same hospital, I can access every doctors/operating/emergency room notes-for all the patients in the hospital- with no security measures.

I am failing to see the logic, and dont understand why I must jump through hoops to see my charts in a hospital, and can freely see anyones, from the clinic- it makes the whole confidentiality process seem like -extra work for no reason

enchanted I agree with that theory, except from the doctors office I can access every patients chart notes-patients we wouldn't ever take care of. basically ,I can read the private records of anyone in the community, who visits the hospital. this makes absolutely no sense. if we could only access the records of patients seen by our doctors,I might agree with your explanation

Actually under the HIPPA laws, patient information is as restricted in doctors' offices the same as in hospitals. I imagine some institutions take it a bit far and some are more lax, but the law applies equally to all.

The HIPPA regulations are very specific to patient privacy if you feel the medical facility is too lax you can report the violation (http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacyhowtofile.... If you are being denied access to your own medical records you can file a complaint as well. You have a right to your records and those of your minor children. Good Luck!

It is actually HIPAA. Medical records should be very restrictive in any medical setting. They are harder to access in a hospital because there are more employee and the record keepers have to make sure it is someone they know who is supposed to have access to records, versus in a doctors office where the setting is smaller and all employees should know eachother.

Beurocratic bs is what it all is. You ask why? Because they can. Because they have nothing better to do. Logic rarely plays a role in our laws.
