What are the requirements for children to receive Social Security benefits after the death of their parent(s)?

My friend worked at an apartment community where a lot of the females had children receiving this benefit.
We are wondering what did the deceased parent do before passing on? How did the children end up receiving a check every month?

If the deceased parent had a job where they had deductions for Social Security taken then the child may be eligible for the benefit. The easiest way to find out is to take the child's birth certificate (with the parent's name on it) and a copy of the parent's death certificate down to the Social Security office and apply for the child's benefit. If the child is not eligible, they will tell you so and why. If the child is eligible, they will tell you so.

It is basically an automated process when the SS administration is notified of the death of the parent.

You may have to fill out some forms and provide documentation to the local SS office.
