The majority of prisoners in the United States are confined in what type of prison?

My guess is Minimum security prisons but I'm not sure. If you know the answer but don't want to give it straight away, please guide me by giving me websites to research.

I'm going to split hairs here. Your question was "what type of prison?" Prisons fall under the authority of the states Departments of Correction. Therefore, the type of prison? In Michigan they're called Level One, or Camps (there's a difference). Both are minimum security, but this can be a misnomer. The main distinction between a minimum security and a maximum security or super-max prison is the amount of and type of yard time the inmates get. Minimum security inmates usually have yard time (time outside their cell, room, cubical, or unit) any time between breakfast and 21:00 hours. They are not on yard during counts, or security exercises. The higher the level, the less yard time given. When an inmate gets to the super-max level, yard time is approximately one hour, and is often combined with shower time and takes place in an inner room, a courtyard, or a cage. The rest of supermax time is spent in a 6x9, locked down.

The vast majority of prisoners in the US are locked up, as others have responded, in county jails. A much different experience.
