Is it illegal to give a fake social security number on checks?

When I write checks at the store (yeah, I know I should get a debit card) and they ask me for my license number or social security number I get uncomfortable and feel like they are asking too much information. So I make up a number. I have never written a bad check, I'm not tryin to pass off a bad check, I just don't want to give that information. Am I putting myself in danger of legal trouble by making up a number when they ask? Is it legal for them to even ask?

Sometimes, I give a fake driver lisence. They have my address and phone number. I just don't see what else they could need.

A check is a legal document: it is a contract. Yes-- if you get caught by bouncing a check that has to go to collection.

However, you will not have a problem unless a check bounces. So, yes, it's illegal (false information on a contract), but not to worry if your checks are good.

You don't have to give your social security number (AND SHOULD NOT)-- a driver's license is sufficient. I can't believe anyone would still ask you for it!

May I ask what state you are located in? Many states do not allow merchants to write the social security number or ID number on the check. It creates the possibility of identity theft. It is legal for them to ask to see these things for identification purposes, but it may not be legal for them to write them down.

Yes. I realize you aren't trying to rip anyone off. but that is illegal--and in some situations, it's a felony. And yes, they do have the right to ask.

A hint: use your driver's license number, NOT your social security number. That way, the information can't be sued by an identity thief. and do get that debit card--you're ust making your life harder.

Hope that helps! :)

i know it is hard to trust people with personal information, but it is illegal it is also illegel for people to use that information for personal gain

Knowingly, yes.
