How could an American citizen not have a Social Security number? |
I read a question from a college age girl who did not have a birth certificate or know her Social Security number. What with income tax returns, school requirements, employer or employee records I thought everyone in the USA would have a Social Security number. Maybe not illegal immigrants but all the rest of us. Is this very common? If you are born at home, home schooled and not held a job outside the family, you could not have a SSN. I believe some Amish and Mennonites do not have SSN's. A social security number is not required by anyone that does not file a tax return or that is not used as a dependent for tax purposes. Schools ask for, but have no real right to know a student's social security number. Any nine numbers will satisfy their needs. It is possible, though not probable to go through life, at least part of it without these documents or to have lost them and not know where they are. |
