What does it mean when a qualification on a job says you need" National Security Clearance"?

I was looking at the CSIS qualifications and saw this. What does this include besides a police check?

Its for the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.....sorry

This is far more in-depth than a basic police check.

Essentially, you will need to be vetted by the US security agencies. This usually includes a thorough background check interviewing people who know you and can vouch for your character.

These are required for jobs in which you will be privy to national security secrets. There are several levels of clearance depending on the access you will need. Secret, Top Secret, and Top Secret-Special Compartmentalized Information are the three basic classifications.

The higher the clearance, the more in-depth. Top Secret usually means family members, close friends, and former employers will be interviewed by the government. Going up to TS-SCI means you will be polygraphed several times and your relationships with foreign nationals will be scrutinized.

This process can take from several months to more than a year. If you are going for a job at State, FBI, DIA, CIA, US Military, military contractor, and some private sector jobs, security clearance will be required if you will have access to sensitive information.

By the way, does CSIS stand for Center for Strategic International Studies? Or does it refer to the Canadian intelligence service? If it's the latter, then none of this applies to you.

First they do a police check to see if you have any felonies in your background. Then to get a National Security Clearance you will have your entire life investigated to see if there might be something that would make you a security risk to the USA.

IE: Are you married and gay and your wife does not know it? That makes you susceptable to blackmail. Are you into porn? Do you visit brothels a lot? Again, potential for blackmail exists.

IE: Were you ever a member of the Communist or Nazi Party? Are you a member of the KKK or Aryan Nations? That tends to indicate you might not play nice with others.

If you think you can not pass a NSC examination, then do not apply for the job..

A national security clearance is only granted after a thorough check of your background and the background of those closely associated with you.

Usually the clearance investigations are done by federal agents or military investigators depending on whether your job is a civilian or military job.

Oncde granted your background may be periodically checked to ensure that nothing has been changed from what their were at your original clearance investigation.

Background check at the national level. That means they do a thorough back ground check to look for convictions in all 50 states. Arrests don't count.Only convictions.
