Anyone in favour of extending the security bill from 28 to 42 days? |
the number of days police can hold some one in the UK without charge There are already laws on the statute book which allow anybody to be held indefinitely in times of crisis. Habeus Corpus is one of the cornerstones of English law, and one of the few good legacies that we gave the world through the empire. The extension to 28 days was a travesty, 42 unspeakable. In order to justify arrest you have to have grounds, a prima fascia case. If there is a prima fascia case then it should be possible to charge within 24 hours, much less 42 days. This is a justification to go fishing, and if the person being held is incommunicado for that length of time, the rest of the cell will know that they have been taken and go to ground. There is not a single person in the country that has not committed some misdemeanour that can be construed as a terrorist act under the current legislation. I have a chemistry textbook that shows me how to make Amatol, and a map of Wiltshire where there are a number of military installations, I could face years in jail for this under the possession of materials clause. No right thinking British person should want the 42 day extension. You don't have to be a terrorist to fall foul of the Anti-Terrorism Bill - little old ladies walking in the countryside on recognised foot-paths around military bases have been arrested under this Bill. What grounds were they held on? Knitting with intent? I agree that Habeus Corpus is a very important Tenant unfortunately the police in the UK are constantly bumbling their way into the houses of innocent people murdering innocent commuters and failing to investigate crimes in the UK to any ones satisfaction. Anyone who aspires to harm any member of this country should be locked away indefinitely. It matters not if they have committed the crime, in the planning stages or just supporting the cause.I am fed up to the back teeth listening to these liberal minded do gooders who go on about civil liberties. What about the liberties of the innocent who get killed or maimed by this lowlife Only Rupert Murdoch. its only going to be people that socialize with terrorists that will get this problem... if they need the extra couple of weeks then they should get it, i wouldnt want to be the person that let him go and then find out hes blown a tube train up!!! To hold somebody on suspicion, without any evidence for this length of time, no matter how serious a crime (terrorism), is a monstrous affront to civil liberty. Nothing to hide - nothing to fear I am!! |
