Do You NOtice More Security Guards?

around grocery stores? I mean at one store I shop there are 2 security guards that were NOT there 2 years ago.

And people still steal stuff as I've seen empty boxes in OTC medicine aisle.

What good are they? I've never seen them arrest anyone either?

As a rule, while by law they are allowed to do so, most store policies prefer that security guards not try to arrest anyone unless they are out and out fistfighting someone. And if weapons are involved in that fight, the security guards as a rule are supposed to only keep others away from the fight until police arrive.

Their point is not to arrest people anyway. They are supposed to be a visual deterrent; in much the same way that a mounted video camera would be a deterrent even if it isn't actually on. They are supposed to discourage people from wrongdoing by their presence, not actually step in all that much to outright stop it.

And some of them are also there as a more medical first responder presence. That is what my second job is; I work security for a building overnight on the weekends.

But the place is very safe, electronic safeguards are all over the place. Its also a great place to work, so most of the company's employees are not going to do anything to risk being fired. But it is a highstress job for them, and they can develop health problems; among them heart problems.

If they should have a heart attack or stroke or something like that, I'm trained in CPR and AED. I am to respond and do whatever possible to keep them going until EMS arrives. I am not there for any real security itself. So maybe those Security guards are there for similar reasons.

I have not seen them in grocery stores, but I have seen them in drug stores. They have a legal right to arrest but most store policies are that they do not. All stores have cameras and most people get caught that way--and the punishment is always worst when the person leaves the store.

Scares normal people to not start, you could yes, just as easily as before, but it scares people to think, what if. Just like some police officers like to scare little kids by going into a classroom and firing off a taser. I could not see any other reason than that for why this officer did that. Just like he tried to fingerprint the classroom... ... ...
