Inheritance ,Social Security and medicare? |
If someone has been disabled and is on Social Security income,, and suddenly gets an inheriatnce from the death of loved ones, how does this effect their SS benefits and can they still apply for Medicare part B ? An in heritance will not affect your social security or your medicare. If however you receive SSI you will lose it until the inheritance is spent. Neither SS nor SSD have any bearing on your wealth, income or assets. ONLY SSI is afftected by this. It will not affect SSD for sure. SSD is based on PAST income and ability to work presently. It's set in stone. It might be possible (but doubtful) that it would affect medicare. They might ask can you afford healthcare yourself in one of their questionairres but I doubt it. I think the only thing it will truely affect is SSI (supplemental Social security). If you are on the regular Social Security then the answer is "NO". If you are on SSI, then it may make you lose it. But, call your Socail Security office and ask them. This will not affect your disability and you should still apply for Medicare. For more details visit: http://www.regnow.com/softsell/nph-softs... Thats up to your local social security office to decide and it depends on how much you get. Like I received an inheritance of $10,000 about 8 years ago while on SSI. They didn't do anything because I showed them proof that I put all the money towards my credit card bills. If its alot of money, they probably will take the checks. They usually go back 5 years when you apply for SSI to check to see that you don't have any money in those years. To the person below me, they said they were on SSI not SSD. Those are 2 different things. |
