Emancipation and social security? |
im am 16, i'll be 17 in august. im looking into emancipation right now and the reason for that is, long story short, my moms dying and if she dies before im 18 i'll have to live my dad, he was really abusive and there is no way in hell im goin to live with him again. so my question is can i get emancipated and still keep my social security If you become legally emancipated then the state will owe you NO social securtiy, as you will be considered an adult. No. You are receiving dependent benefits because of your Mom's illness. If you become emancipated, you are no longer a dependent so the money from SS will stop. In order to become emancipated you have to prove that you can support yourself 100%. That means you will have to have a job that earns enough to pay all of your expenses. if you cant support yourself and are living off SSI I don't think they will emancipate you. Do you have family friends you can move in with when she passes? Or a boyfriend? Or an adult girlfriend you can room with? In a word - yes. |
