Volunteer Firefighter Job Security? |
I am a volunteer firefighter in Michigan. I was getting ready for work and was just about to leave when I was dispatched to a house fire. I immediately called work and told them the details and said I would try to be in later. After the fire and clean-up I was too tired to be any help at work so I called and told them I would not be coming in. Now I am facing possible job termination or discipline. Are there any laws regarding job security to volunteer firefighters in Michigan? (please post URL) Thank you I have found info on volunteer firefighter job security laws in other states, but i cannot find any laws on the national level or any in Michigan regarding my well being for missing work due to a medical emergency or structure fire. No, there are no protections that I am aware of. The key is its a volunteer position. So you're not obligated to respond. I don't advocate being dishonest, but some of my friends will call in sick if they plan to miss work due to a fire or rescue operation. It's probably best not to tell your employer unless you've worked out some kind of arangement in advance. Try to keep your job. It's tough to spend time volunteering if you can't pay the rent. volunteerism has no rights for job protection as you suggest. No. Why would you do that??? YOU are a volunteer. Nothing indicated that you are required to go to the fire. Not that I am aware of. Although I would be appreciative of your volunteer service, your employer probably needs you at work. no. |
