No more job security these days?

Is it me or are jobs, specially the big corporate jobs, are they not secure anymore? Or has that been a normal thing for decades? And it seems that when applying for jobs in my area being qualified is no longer a job quality, its like being over qualified or qualified at all can disqualify you. What the hell is up with that? Big stores are giving all the jobs out to the border crossers and high school grads and not to those mature and with the sufficient skills to do the jobs correctly. I know severl friends who have been let go of a job of big corporations because the employer first tried to get them to quit by creating hostile work environment or by harassing employees with no repercussions , my friends are now filing for wrongful termination and they are of different companies but is this turning into a trend?

So basically, we as society are f**ked

It's been since Reagan broke PATCO. Reagan the god of the Republicans started this mess of no job security, no pensions, and big corporate profits with little regulation to protect the consumer.

You have got it right, there is no more job security these days.

It used to be that the Corporation asked you to be loyal to them and then they would be loyal to you.

Now, most Corporations won't last until you are 65 or 68 and eligible for retirement. If they fail, it is goodby. If they get bought-out, it can be goodby or start over (especially for the managers.)

Only safe spot is fire department, police department (best because you can still retire young) or some other government job.

It's been going on since the 80s. My dad has been affected by all the nonsense. He's a professional. One company tried to get him to train a non professional and being the smart guy he is saw through it and told the "kid" to go to college if he wanted to be one.

But the right wingers will say our system is so perfect and great. They live in lala land so I guess for them it is. We in the real world know differently.

All I've seen in my profession is short term contracts unless I go after a government job.

Not much.....
The business "culture" has changed considerably esp in recent decades.
Upper eschelon / corporate greed is what drives companies.
Used to be ....work hard & get ahead.
Now it is work harder ,do more w/ less & we might let you keep your job.
The "pressure management" style is not that new , but Jack Welch wannabes have taken it to extremes.
How....keep em hopping, hungry, & afraid.
Feed the employees the line "we have to maximize profits to satisfy the stockholders"...
Translation....less for you ,is more for upper management whos salaries ,perks, stock options etc are based on pure bottom line.
When the company gets into trouble after it has been bled by every short term gain that benefits the execs, they bail out on golden parachutes.
Small wonder the real wealth in this country is concentrated in a very small % of the population.
Nothing wrong w/ getting rich, but keeping a tight lid on the actual "producers" of corporate profit to benefit a few & make it harder for the majority to make gains is just good business sense for top execs.
No such thing as a win/ win.
In their eyes, it is not a win for them unless someone loses.
Comes down to .... "less for them means more for me"
Have seen excercise equipment & luxury corporate cars delivered the same day there was a layoff.
Worked for a great co.w/ a great product reputation & took early retirement to save my mental & physical health after there was a Mgmt shift to the "gestapo" tactics you mention.
Might be amoral , but not illegal to be a corporate vampire.
Trend?......been around a long time , just more widespread & visible these days.
Best regards.

Oh ...welcome to reality ...where have you been all these years ? It's been this way for a long time. It started about two generations ago after the baby boomers. The old values have changed ...there is not such thing as loyalty, honesty ...etc. etc. Now is back stabbing, betrayals, theft, frauds, lies, etc.etc. Nowadays people change jobs like every three years or less...experience does not matter anymore (Look at the recent presidential elections) ...it's who you know, and who you are connected to inside the company for whom you want to work for ...(Like the winner of the democratic presidential ticket ...he is connected to Oprah who gives him tons of money ...to the Kennedys, Kerrys, Pelosis, Edwards etc.)...it's connections, referrals that counts.
Education and knowledge does not matter anymore. Opens some doors some place to get to meet the receptionists that could invite you to meet their bosses ...and take it from there...Most companies now don't give you retirement benefits nor Health benefits, and some might not give Social security, you'll have to pay it on your own.
One recent trend now is to hire "contract" employees...independent workers, they pay them a fee to work on a project...once it is completed ..bye, bye ...you take care of your taxes and get your own health care, no vacation, no sick leave. Happy Holidays...
I could be one of your friends...who worked for a hostile environment and was harrassed everyday, I opted for early retirement to get my pension and benefits and now I am working at another place.
The motto now is "You are on your own" my friends.
Good Luck.
