Why do people belive that illegals get paid under the table? |
What is it the 70's or early 80's. I have been around illegals in the workforce for most of my life and I can tell you that nowadays maybe 1 out of 1000 get paid in cash, if any at all do. Most use falsified documents and get federal and or state taxes deducted. This includes agricultural work. It Is crazy to think that an employer can afford to pay cash in todays economy. Remember employers are required to have social security numbers not verify them, in most states . Do you think it saves money to pay some one cash and then have to pay an accountant to "fix" your books. If you own a company you have to show your expenses for tax purposes and its just not cost effective or easy to try and hide cash payments. On top of that what if something happens to the worker on the job site then workers comp gets dragged into it and the company is screwed. No illegal in his right mind would work for cash they have seen how badly cash payed employees can be abused and shorted money for work done So--the person that mows lawns and cleans houses do not get paid in CASH-- Why do they believe that? Because people believe everything they read in forwarded emails. Remember that most illegal immigrants don't work for major companies. They work for small businesses, like owner-operated trucking or cleaning companies, or as domestic labor, etc. Very few illegal immigrants work in big companies that have accountants and payroll departments. Illegals are not usually employed by one employer, I live in Wine Country and I can tell you where they sit waiting for people to hire them and pick them up. I work in the construction industry and have been forced to compete with Mexican framing crews. The way it typically works is that a Mexican contractor comes in with legal authority to do so (he has a SS # and all that). Almost his entire crew is illegal. All payments from the general contractor are made to him and he in turn pays his crew, IN CASH!! They send the money back home, he files taxes and claims the money he has paid them as deductions, however he does not use 1099's as are "technically" required. The payments to his men are then untraceable unless he is audited and asked for proof of who he made the payments to. If that is the case, he has several options: He can go through the audit and "owe" the IRS money if he loses. He can also go back to Mexico and later re-enter under another identity. He can also allow one of his fellow country-men to be the new paymaster and basically "disappear" from IRS records. American contractors who pay taxes and cannot run or hide from the IRS have to compete with this. I know first hand, so every time I hear this line of crap that "illegal aliens" (Mexicans is what people really mean, but don't the balls to say) pay their taxes and contribute to the system that won't be able to draw from, I want to F****** PUKE!!!!! The unfortunate truth is that the average Mexican is smarter than the average American because of the propaganda spoon fed to us everyday through the corporate media who benefits more than anyone from cheap labor. Ever think about why everything is made in China? I don't blame or hate the Mexicans either. Everyone wants to do better for their families. It just p***** me off that Americans are too dumb to know the truth even when it's biting them in the ****!!! I don't imagine that too many people who hire illegal domestics bother to get employer identification numbers. A lot still do.All the guys at the Home depots and many gardeners.Or they're working with a false s.s.n.. I do a lot of remodeling in wealthy areas and a lot of people there work for cash. You may have a more limited exposure to this phenomenon but it exists on a large scale. If they do pay taxes, they tend to claim many dependents in Mexico-which is true since a lot of their money gets sent back.Whenever they can they work for cash. With small and medium sized companies I agree with your view, although 1 in 1000 is far from the actual figure I'd wager. In the San Francisco Bay Area the tally would probably be more like 2 or 3 out of 10 maybe more of illegals don't pay a penny and I've met them in all walks.I know carpenters making 35- 50 dollars an hour-cash. |
