Legal question regarding Fedex?

i sent cash via fedex to someone who is selling me a diamond engagement ring. Aside from the fac that it's not recommended to do things this way, is there anything illegal about it ?? i tracked the package and it was never delivered this a.m. -- when i called them, fedex said i have to talk to their security department on monday. the amount i sent was substantial, $10,000, but so is the ring - my question is, do i have anything to worry about ?? is it ILLEGAL to send cash like this via fedex ?? can they legally not return the package to me because it's cash ??

It's not illegal to send cash through Fedex, but it does violate their terms and conditions and invalidates any insurance you may have purchased. If the package is lost you have no recourse. Fedex can not keep the money, but they can refuse to deliver the parcel and return it to you.

I don't think they can keep your money but the Feds will likely get involved because of the amount. You know you can' t even deposit or remove $10k of your own money from the bank without the feds getting involved. Good luck! You may want to contact a tax attorney or accountant.

They can't illegally steal your money at customs but they can legally seize it seeing that you didn't (and are not allowed) to send cash by FedEX.

When bringing money into Canada (US has the same policy) any monetary value (in cash, notes, checks) over $10,000 CDN/US must be declared. You can bring it in- just need to declare it.

FedEX prohibits the sending of money.

Your next problem is, it is not illegal for the other party whom you sent the money to, to suggest they didn't receive or that you sent them an empty package (you have no proof you sent money).

It sounds to me like you are out of luck, and I wouldn't be optmistic about getting your funds back. FedEX lost 4 of my packages once and only checks were inside, let alone $10,000 US which is a lot of money to a guy making $20 per hour......

They can't legally seize it whatsoever unless they suspect illicit activity but they can temporarily hold it until they figure out what the heck is going on (being US customs) not FedEX.
