Stolen propane tank?

So we just moved into a new house yesterday and I unpacked the propane tank and left it in the backyard. This morning, it was gone. The only people who would know it was back there would be our backyard neighbors behind us and the people to our right. The people to our right have been friendly and saying HI to us when we see them, but they seem to have a lot of useless junk sitting in their garage and backyard. And people behind us have a nice yard with an alarm system installed. We had a security system installed at our last house but not this one, and now I think we may need to install one in again. What should I do? Should I worry about my car being in our backyard? I just can't believe 1 night in our new house and someone already is stealing from us, even if it was an empty propane tank, it only makes me worry about what else they will steal from us.

It was the small one for the grill. Maybe I'm making a big deal out of it, but I'm just shocked someone would just drop into our backyard and take something. I'll ask both neighbors if they saw anything. And we're probably going to put in an alarm system again.

Chalk it up as experience. I would ask both of the neighbors if they saw anything. You already know it was one of them (probably the junkers). They probably gave it to their brother-in-law, so it won't be there.

I wouldn't worry about your car, it's a little harder to steal. Was the propane tank a 5 gallon, or one of the big ones, like 250 gallons?

If it's one of the big ones I'd file a police report. If it's a 5 gallon one (you didn't say how big it was) for BBQs I wouldn't bother with a police report.

An alarm is probably a good idea. When you go out of town you won't have to worry about your neighbor robbing you again.

Go to the people you believe might have stolen it and ask if they saw anyone around who might have taken it. Tell them you are really upset that on your first night at your new home someone robbed you. Do NOT act like you think they did it.

Then tell them you can't tolerate this kind of thing and that you are going to install one of those cameras.......

Your stuff should be safe from them after that.

Vague at best.

Although it appears that your neighbors may have stolen it, you have not proved with the information provided they did it.

People steal things all the time. Could an unknown party (burglar) been in the neighbor hood. If your car was stolen would you immediately blame the neighbors?

It sucks to have your stuff stolen though.

Good Luck,

Welcome To The Neighborhood!!!!
That really sucks!!...I would have to say to write that propane tank off. But like others have said, ask the neighbors if they might have seen any suspicious looking or any low life characters hanging around your backyard. Then either get a camera , or a very large dog.

And why haven"t you reported it to police? It doesn"t matter what was stolen it is still a theft. And yes I would speak to both neighbors,if they aren"t to blame then they should appreciate you making them aware of thefts in thier neighborhood too.
