When Does your working day cease?

Where I work there is often not enough car parking slots and the company has said people should double park.
Often when I leave work my car is blocked in, I have to call security and get the person to move their car. In a lot of cases I have been stuck an additional 30minutes at work.

this policy is not of my doing, and I am trapped at work for longer than I want, often catching the worst of the rush hour because of the delay.

Should I be allowed to book this 30 minutes to working time, as it is the companies policy that prevents me leaving home on time?

I drive to work, because the company needs me to go to customer sites sometimes and pays for my car. so public transport is not an option.

Yeah you should!

My last boyfriend would charge 30 minutes to his time card every time he got a call from someone from work while he was at home after work hours! He would warn them too before they started talking - hilarious right.

According to the Department of Labor Employment Standards Administration Wage and Hour Division and the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA):
"Workday", in general, means the period between the time on any particular day when such employee commences his/her "principal activity" and the time on that day at which he/she ceases such principal activity or activities.
Based upon the fact that your principal activity ended, you are not working and do not have to be paid. This is no different than an employee working at the pentagon who has to walk thirty minutes from a distant assigned parking lot space, and through halls of extended length to arrive at their work desk...you don't get paid to get to work.
Getting such a parking space would be considered a tremendous perk for most such employees of course.

Most people don't get parking at work and have to pay for it.

Your employer provides free parking (which has quite a high value) So stop whining or park somewhere else.

If I were your employer and you tried charging me for the extra 30 minutes I'd take away everyone's parking priviledges and tell them why and who caused it.

May I suggest parking somewhere else???? Even a block away or so...
Do you have park and ride where you live? That way you can avoid driving and parking and the stress that causes altogether.
Read the paper. Listen to your music. Meditate. Do yoga on the roof of your car while you wait to get out are all other options as well! LOL!
OR...
If you have flexi-time at work, come to work a couple of hours later so YOU get to park on the outside.
OR...
Get another job.

So many options. Stop stressing. Go with the flow....

You could put in a grievance but the bottom line will end up being, you choose to work there and parking is your option. It sucks, I know, but they will give you a run-around and say they are working on addressing the issue,,,but you won't squeeze a penny out of them for the inconvenience.

Check with your HR department, if you feel it is the way to claim your right. If you think that way, means other people who can't wait even for 5 minutes to park their car can claim working hours too.

Choose the company which they have plenty of parking lots.

Sorry, but retrieving your vehicle from the parking lot is considered as transportation from your job and it is not covered as work hours. You have the right to park elsewhere to avoid this problem.

i doubt they would let you do that...my hubby has the same problem. the company might say it's not their problem...you could take public transport.

you could always work through lunch hour & leave that hour earlier if you have flexi-time...that might work?

this sort of attitude has lost wars, get a life, if you can't sort out a simple parking problem, you certainly don't deserve to be paid an extra 30Min's overtime,FIND ALTERNATIVE PARKING FURTHER AWAY AND USE YOUR LEGS,

That sucks man, I dunno, I'm not a lawyer. I'd suggest trying public transportation. But considering how bad it is in most parts of this country, that's probably not an option.

Yeah, I think so. If that is their policy they should have to pay you for it. I have on streeet parking at my house and and I truly understand what you mean.

you do the double parking on someone then their blocked in instead, just park after them it doesnt sound to difficult to me.

I would hope so! Or they should let you leave a half an hour early.

I am a Housewife/Mother, so my working day ceases when I am in bed,

The day you die.
