Teenager Emancipation? |
there have been quite a few problems between my parents and myself. They consistently threaten to have me removed from their apartment. Is this possible since I am 17 years old? My father passed away and I have been receiving survivor benefits. I recently requested to have the benefits come in my name, instead of my mother's. I have spoken with the US Social Security Administration, and they informed me that as a 17 year old, I can only choose a payee of my choice. If I fail to choose my parents, is this grounds for removal? If they do remove me, and I do become emancipated, what are some of the ramifications? Are there any governmental programs for emancipated teenagers, or for teenagers who live on their own? There has to be a reason your mom would want you to be removed from your home. I am sure you are having real problems, but it usually takes two to create a fight, so I am sure you are playing a part in it as well. You can call the local courts office and ask them for advice. You can request a Guardian ad Litem if the courts deem it is in your best interest. Being that you are close to 18, there may not be much you can do. |
