How long does the Social Security office retain records on people? |
My husband passed away 10 years ago. He was recieving social security at the time of his death. I will be applying for survivor benefits but most of my records are missing including what I need is proof of what the benefit amount was that they were paying him. All my tax records etc. went missing from my home when he died. I regularly get a "statement" from social security, including info as to the total $$ withheld by each year, back to when I started working (in the 1960s!). Doing genealogy, I also regularly use the social security death index, that includes persons who died in the 1960s.. and family can send for the original file (to check the original application for family research information). Thus, they have THOSE back as far as pre 1950s. yes they will , god bless and good luck |
