How do people get their ss#?

How do people get their social security numbers...Im curious. Like is it in order by your age and date of birth....

Someone who really knows...answer this.

My brother and sister are twins and they have almost indentical numbers.....

The first three numbers represent where you were born or applied for your SS#.
The middle two are group numbers, they show the order that the # was issued in the area you were born. The lower the two middle digits are,the older the SS# is.
The last four numbers are random numbers picked to create an unique number with the other two sets of numbers.

For someone who knows the system, they can pretty much figure out where you were born and either about how old you are or how long you have had your number.

The twins should have the same first 5 numbers, the last four should be different, but maybe by only a few digits.

You know that is a good question! I would think a computer system generates numbers and than produce a ss#.
