Border Protection seized my money while boarding a plane, what is the best way to retrieve it? |
I was boarding an international flight with a sum of money over $10,000, which requires being declared at customs. I asked about a dozen airport and security employees before boarding where I had to go declare the money (as it was my first time), and each indicated that I had to do it at the gate. At the gate I asked again, and they indicated that there was customs officials just in the passageway to the plane, and to ask them. I approached them, asking how to declare my money, and they took me into questioning for an hour, seized my money, and made me miss my flight for that day. I had to pay an additional $200 to the airline to book a new flight, despite having had my boarding pass in my hand. It has been nearly two months, and I am still without my money. Each week I call customs, they say they will contact me after several more weeks. This is unacceptable. If anyone has any legal advice, or any ideas on something that may be of use, I'd greatly appreciate it.
