Is it ok for a library to get your personal information?

I recently visited my local library and wanted to apply for library card. When I went to fill out the application, it asks for name, address, phone #s, DOB, driver's license or ID #, and social security #. I'm obviously not putting down my social, but should I give my other info too? Its just a library card, shouldn't they just take my name, number and address?

Yeah, I wouldn't give them my SS# either. I don't really see why they would even need that. When you return the application just ask them if it's really necessary for them to have it. They may say no and that you can leave that part blank.

However, your name, address, phone number, driver's license # or ID #, and even email address would be necessary. At my library they use your driver's license number as an alternate user ID # for the library's online catalog and to verify that you really live in that city. At my library it's free for residents of our city to get a library card, but if you aren't a resident you have to pay about $30 a year to have a card. They use your phone number and email address to notify you if you have fines or if an item that you put on hold is ready to pick up.

I hope this helps. 鈾?/div>

You're very welcome and thank you!! 鈾? Report It

You are not required to furnish your SSN and they are only allowed to request it.

However, should you not provide it, they are within their rights in refusing service to you.

Don't blame me, I didn't write that law.

That definitely doesn't sound like something that is really needed. Ask the person in charge why such a thing is needed and if he doesn't give in, then just go to another library.
