How do I go about getting a felony from 16yrs ago cleared so I can pursue a career in Law Enforcement?

16yrs ago I unknowingly deposited a stolen check in to my account, and was convicted of felony fraud. I am seeking a carrer in Law Enforcement and every option says i will be dined because of my felony what do I do. I made a mistake I except that. Now as a 37yr old married father of three I am looking for security for my children. Any suggetions would be good.

Well, you do not say what state you are in, and that will affect things...

My suggestion is to talk to an attorney, but while you are waiting, here is a list of expungement regulations by state:

Good luck! No one should have to suffer for what happened when they were 20, as long as they have been upstanding since then.

I work in the court system in Florida. In this state, you can purchase an expungement packet and file it with the state for consideration to be removed.

And as someone incorrectly mentioned earlier, your right to carry a handgun may NOT have been taken away from you. The state prosecuting attorney must usually suggest it, depending on the severity of the crime, and then the judge will rule on it. Many people convicted of crimes believe that they can't own or carry a gun, or even vote, and that's not true.

An attorney would be a good option, but the state you are in may have do-it-yourself applications. You'll need to contact the county court where your case was heard and find out from them.

I wish you luck. It can be a bit tedious of a process, but if you stick with it you will most likely be able to have the charge removed. It will then be unavailable to the public, but still available to law enforcement agencies. Just be very truthful with the hiring agency during the application process, and let them know that you have applied for or have had the charge expunged.

The word is denied. You need to get an attorney to request that it be, (expunged), removed from your record. It may be removed but because of the felony status you will still not be allowed to carry or own a handgun. Which equates to no law enforcement job involving a weapon. I believe only the Gov. of your state can remove it completely.

You might try application in a very small town or county (sheriff deputy).

When you have to fill in that "spot' on written application, write, "Details available during interview".

I guarantee nothing, but that worked for someone I know.

It won't go away. Once a convicted felon always a convicted felon. No one will ever hire you. Make another career choice.

I have a problem with your story. Did you plead out? What's this "unknowingly" bit? Are you arguing innocence or not?
