Can you get your security guard license before being hired as a security guard?

I'm interested in being an unarmed security guard. I was told that all 50 states require you to have a security license. Can I get a security license before I'm hired or do I have to be hired by a company first then go through the training and obtain my license?

If you plan to be an employee of a company, there is only a couple of states that require training, background check and registration issuance prior to applying and being hired by a security company. A majority of states, you must pass company background check & training - your registration will be sent to your state licensing agency for a state & federal background check - if passed the state will send the guard card to your company's address who will then issue it to you.
Since you did not indicate the state you are in, I cannot give you your states specs. You should contact the company at which you wish to apply and find out more details. Or if you know what your state licensing agency is, contact them.

You do not need a license to be an unarmed security guard., However, the firm that hires you must have a license.
