Do all jobs require physical proof of a social security card? |
I am starting my first job job but my boss said i need to show him my social security card. i have my number, but my parents lost my card a long time ago. i am a US citizen, i have my birth certificate, passport, and drivers liscense. If I apply for a replacement card it will take at least a month to get the receipt. My friend (who works there) says if I dont have it..."I'm screwed." Which I don't get..because she's not a citizen herself. So is it really legal that your boss sees your actual social security card? i already filled out a form to get a replacement card but the site that tells you where your local SSN office is, is "temporarily shut down." what should i do!!! this is an emergency The company will have to verify your SSN. But you can get away with not showing your actual card. There is a list of acceptable documents printed right on the form I9 that you will be asked to fill out by any legit business. You can view the list at the link below. It states that you can bring one document from column A, which establishes both your identity and your eligibility to work. Included in column A is a US passport. The I-9 form also gives you the option of presenting a certified copy of your birth certificate along with your driver's license or state ID. As long as both are current and your DL/ID has a photo, they should be acceptable to your employer. What Lisa A said. Yes. They have to pay in to social security for every hour you work so they need to verify it. Lisa is correct. The form that an employer is supposed to have filled out for every employee is called an I-9. Now way and NO HOW is there a requirement to have an actual social security card. One reason is that it is not considered actual identification in anyway and is not usefull in any way as it is just a piece of paper. YES U BIG TIME NEED UR SOCIAL GO TO THE SOCIAL DEPARTMENT TAKE UR ID AND UR CERTIFICATE SO THEY CAN GIVE U ANOTHER ONE.....WELL UR FRIEND JUST PROBABLY GOT ONE IN THE CORNER OF A MEXICAN STORE AND THEY GAVE HER 4 PROBABLY 60 BUCKS LOL NO THE PARENTS TAX WONT WORK BRING UR ID AND CERTIFICATE...... they should if they are a legitimate business. Yes what a thing I went to the Social Security Office on Friday.Because again a lost my social security card too but for me is not the first time I lose it. well they gave me a print out of my Social Security. I will be receiving a replacement card trew the mail with in 2 weeks.maybe with you go to the office with you birth certificate you can also, get a print out and a replacement. I am a citizen as well. they need to see the card to make sure it is really your number you are losing. Anyone can memorize the numbers and use it, by law your employer needs to see the card and make a copy of it. I do not think the tax recepit will help you, you could call the SS office and see if they will send your employer something or maybe be able to send your card out faster. Your firnd does not need to be a citizen to work, as long as she has a work visa or other proof she is legally allowed to work |
