I am trying to find out what if any laws there are regarding volunteering as a security guard at a church with a current guard card

Yes,
In order to work as a security guard you have to be licensed. It does not matter if you are volunteering or not. You must either have a "guard card" or a proprietary security officers license". Both licenses are issued from the California BSIS.

Although this is the law, you could most likely get away with a short term volunteer gig as most police officers don't question security guards for their licenses or permits.
