Prison gangs and security?

What are some ways to alleviate prison gangs and crimes? How to make prisons safer

Well, Arizona uses a process called validation. If an inmate is validated as a gang member they are automatically sent to one of two maximum security prisons SMU1 and SMUII.

These prisons have the inmates locked individually in their own cell, have limited access to each other. They go to rec by themselves, they eat by themselves, and do virtually all activities in complete isolation.

All mail coming in and out of the facility is inspected and searched for intelligence on gang activities and all phone calls are monitored and recorded.

Although this program cannot eliminate their involvement in gangs and criminal enterprises within and outside the prison, it does limit it.

There was a time when prisoners were required to work all day in the fields or on roadwork. As a result of backbreaking daily work, they lacked the energy or the inclination to take part in gang activities or to commit crimes. This type work resulted in cutting expenses for the community at large and produced vegetables and food for inmates, resulting in reduced costs for prisons. Yes, there were "chain gangs" and somewhere along the line, it was decided that we should not mistreat murders and thieves so unkindly so we now spend money to lock them in their cells all day.
