I can't speak for your case, because I don't know the details, but I can tell you this:

I was married to a man who died. He was not my daughter's father, and did not adopt her.

I collect social security death benefits on my daughter's behalf because my late husband (my daughter's step father) provided more than 1/2 of her support while he was alive. She will get those benefits until age 16 or 18 (I don't remember which).

So, you MAY be eligible for death benefits. It depends upon your age and how much of your support was provided by your step father. I hope this helps.
