How much should my check be for SocialSecurity. Please help!?

Well my dad got granted for his social security. I hear he will get a check for me and my mother too. I was wondering about how much ours would be each month. My dad says that he will give me mine, even tho it goes to him. =] I am 16 and my dad has made an average of 50,000 a year and he has been working for I think 30 years. We are also in the state of Louisiana. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Since your dad worked long enough to qualify for Social Security benefits, he is entitled to a check once he retires due to age or total disability. As his child under the age of 18, there is an additional family benefit of 1/2 of his check amount. This is for the costs of raising you, so if he gives it to you, you are fortunate.

Your benefit will continue until you reach the age of 18, unless you are still in high school. If you're still in high school, benefits can continue until you reach 19.

If you have any other siblings who are under the age of 18 (or 19 if still in HS), there is only one benefit check for the children. You each will NOT be entitled to a check for half his monthly SS check.

Your mother may not get a separate benefit unless she is of retirement age. She will then be eligible for her own social security check based on her record or on her husband's record, whichever offers the highest benefit for her.

I hate to say it, but you have been misinformed. Has your father been granted disability or just his social security? To the best of my knowledge, it is just one check for social security that is based on how much he put in, not marital status or number of dependents. Given that you have to be at least 62 to receive SS(at a reduced rate) or 67 to receive the full amount, my guess is that he will take home around $1200-1400 a month. I could be wrong about how dependents affect social security because that is not a typical situation. Most people eligible for SS do not have dependents under 18. But I'm pretty certain that there will be just one check. Dependents generally matter if a parent dies that has children under 18. In that case the parent would receive a check for the minor child. But that is the only way that I know there would be a separate check for you. For your sake, I hope I'm wrong about this.
