The growing percentage of maintenance work that has been outsourced by U.S. airlines has become a focal point in the debate over whether proper procedures are in place to ensure aircraft safety.

In what has become a hot-button issue in recent weeks, the Federal Aviation Administration is taking a closer look at how it regulates aircraft maintenance at U.S. airlines. Congress on Thursday will hold hearings to review issues around the safety and security of outsourcing.

Many U.S. airlines have increased outsourcing over the past several years to cut maintenance costs. But concerns are mounting that monitoring of that work isn't sufficient, particularly when work is done outside the U.S.

Because the airlines couldn't stay in business paying Americans an honest wage... as it is they are so poorly managed and ridiculously subsidized... I'd rather see them all go bankrupt and just not travel...

This is why America needs to wake the hell up and realize that the only way this country is going to survive is if we are truly a free market... which means that some big business' are going to have to go belly up... boohoo... guess they should have saved some of that money like they've been telling us to... before devaluing the dollar and killing interest rates...

That being said... if you start a business... and you mismanage and steal everything from your employees and investors... do you think you'll be getting the royal treatment like those at Bears Stern and J.P. Morgan... or do you figure you'll be in a cage for a couple years at the very least...

I would like to know the same. This country will be a third world country in no time at the rate things like this are going.

"Outsourced" in this context means that the airline contracts with another company to do the work. It is different from "offshoring", in which case that company is based in a foreign country. The contractors in this case are probably American companies.

We are back to the "patriotic duty" bit........innit!

Regardless of nationality, aircraft maintenance is best carried out by specialist companies. The reason is very basic: undiluted quality management!

Industry at large runs at about 99.94% in terms of proper goods and services. Aircraft Pilotage and Maintenance runs at quality levels close to 100%.

If routine airline quality management were to be applied, then aircraft safety would be similar to baggage handling.

..............and we all can see what is happening at Heathrow, at the moment..........
