Got caught shoplifting, please i need some answers. i recently got caught for shoplifting at dominick's?

(safeway) grocery store in illinois. i am 18 years old. i took about $16 worth of merchandise. i stepped out of the store & a man dressed in the typical uniform came out too & told me i needed to come back inside with him. he brought me to a small room & asked me to take out the merchandise from my purse. i did. he asked me for an id, and if all the info was valid. it was. i handed him my driver's license. he asked how old i was. he saw i was 18 and said i was old enough to know better. he left w/ my id, & returned & asked if i had $ to pay for the merchandise. i said yes. he said that when i left i was to pay for the merchandise, will receive a ticket in the mail, & was banned for life & would be arrested if i returned & said if i pay the ticket, there will be no record. no police were called, no arrest, but this security guard had a badge. am i in big trouble?
about how much will my ticket be?
will my parents ever find out? if so, how?
with my ticket, will i receive a court date?

listen i know what i did to the fullest extent. trust me i dont need anyone else telling me how foolish i am and how stupid i was. i wont do it ever again. trust me. i appreciate those comments, but i know what i did and am going to take full responsibility for it. it was my action, my fault, my fine. i just dont know if i will get a court date. the officer did not mention it, and only told me i would get a letter from dominick's in the mail with the ticket. i know how lucky i am and how much worse it could have been. really, i do.

The "ticket" will be a bill from the store for $150 or more. Illinois, like most states, allows stores to collect a "civil penalty" from shoplifters. If you don't pay it, they can turn the case over the police and you can be arrested.

If you do pay it, they won't bother.

Hum...I am not even going to ask why you were shoplifting.

However, they could press further charges but I don't believe they will for the amount of the merchandise you stole. The most that would happen is that you will get a ticket with a fine. No your parents won't find out.

First of all that was a very foolish thing to do. You are lucky that security guard didn't call the police and have you arrested. It sounds like since he banned you from the
store and threatened to have you arrested if you didn't
pay the ticket it ends there with no court date. I don't
know anyone who every shoplifted, never heard of getting
a ticket for it. Since you are 18 your parents will not be called
as he is treating you as an adult. I'm sure the ticket will have a dollar value exceeding the items you stole. You won't ever do that again cause it's not worth it. Better to be honest.!!

You are real stupid. Were you hungery. Why did you steal in the first place. Stand up and take responsibilty for your errors.

Consider yourself lucky you didn't get free bracelets and a chauffered ride to the police station! You are also lucky they let you go with a ban on going back. Pay the ticket and learn from it. You made a bad decision and now you have to live with it. It could have been a lot worse.

i've never heard of such a thing...any chance this person told you that to scare you? i only had 1 friend who was caught shoplifting (when i was a teenager) and the store had a police officer come in and the officer released her into her parents custody...but she was 16 and possibly since you are an adult they don't bother with that??? i don't know...sounds weird to me, seems they would be harder on an adult than a kid.

you'll have to wait and see.

real smart genius!

all stores should prosecute shoplifters
and it should be on your perm. record
shame on you

Raicha has the right answer. However, if the security guard who caught you is unscrupulous, he could use the information to blackmail you. Make sure that when you pay the ticket, you make the check out to Dominick's and get a written release from them stating that your debt to them is paid and that they agree not to file charges. Don't make a check out to an individual name whatever you do.

And you should tell your parents what happened. They will help keep you from getting into an even bigger mess. You may need a lawyer. Don't try to handle this on your own. Not just from the point of view of accepting responsibility for your actions, but also from the point of view of honesty and the family sticking together. Then you will be an adult for real.

Your ticket will be hefty. If you dont pay it you WILL be arrested. And if you ever step foot in that store again, you WILL be arrested. They aren't kidding around. You are very lucky that they are giving you this opportunity to avoid police involvement. It's extremely pathetic for an 18yr old to shoplift. I hope your parents do find out, the humiliation will be the least of your problems to come.
