Can anyone tell me if the MAZE Prison is still being used in the UK?

and are there other prisons throughout the English countryside?

Does the UK have different prisons, meaning they have one for civilian crimes and another one for say treason, terrorism, high security white collar-crimes, etc?

Thanks and God Bless

Clem Kiddelhopper

HMP Maze is in the process of being demoished at the minute but there was talk of one H-block being kept for a museum. In UK there are not different prisons for different crimes, rather individual prisons are categorised as follows:-

Category A - Prisoners who present a severe threat to the public, police, or the security of the state and for whom escape must be made as difficult as possible however unlikely that escape may be
Category B - Prisoners for whom the strictest security conditions are not necessary, but for whom escape must still be made as difficult as possible
Category C - Prisoners who do not have the will or resources to make a determined escape bid, but who cannot be trusted in open conditions
Category D - Prisoners who can be reasonably trusted in open conditions

Certain criminals such as terrorists, gang members etc are usually sent to what are called 'Category A dispersal prisons' which are basically maximum security prisons in the middle of nowhere, and they are seperated from their co-criminals (if applicable) to minimise the possibility of a successful escape. Most prisoners in the UK prison system are category C. Persons convicted of civil offences (nonpayment of fines, council tax or child support, contempt of court etc) are held in prison as civil prisoners. Whilst so held they are allowed to wear civilian clothes, allowed unlimited visits, dont associate with other prisoners but dont get any remission on the sentence

Hope this helps Clem

The Maze, Long Kesh has been closed for many years. The only prisons remaining in NI are Maghaberry and Magilligen.
The female prison in Armagh was closed years ago and female prisoners are now kept in Hydebank. NI would appear to differ from mainland UK and seperate their prisoners in so far as sex offenders are kept seperate from the rest. Crumlin Road also closed years ago.

Maze is no longer being used, was closed in 2000 and handed over to Northern Ireland executive in March 2004. We have 3 prisons left in N. Ireland Maghaberry high security, Magilligan, Medium security, and Hydebank Wood, Medium to low security for young offenders.

Scotland have 15 prisons, don't know how many England and Wales have.

Same prisons for everyone, only high and low security.Maze closed down a long time ago
