Identity Theft by own mother?

How is it that Detroit Edison allowed my mother to use my social security number to obtain electricity when I was only 14 years of age at the time? Now I have a bill totaling over $400 that my mother has left unpaid & has refused to pay. My question is why do they not look into things more and realize that my last name didnt match with what is on my ss card and that I was only 14? They didnt look into anything and because of their mistake I'm stuck dealin with the legal side of things

Chuck you are a moron!! So your saying it was ok for her to do this to me at 14 and never pay what was her's?? She ran up her account and then had it put in my name when she couldn't pay hers! So you mean to tell me that the sprint bill & fingerhut bills should now be my responsibilty too?!?! Give me a break!!

you will have to take your mom to small claims court. i hate to say it but in order to make her pay for it you will have to.

i don't know why it takes so little to get a power account.

i am sure the judge will berate your mother for doing this.

it's a real identity fraud case and she can also do time for doing this with your SS card. pretty sure some of it may fall under Federal crimes because of the SS card.

you can apply for legal aid and that way you won't have to pay anything or very little for a lawyer. i suggest you get one too.

please take her to small claims and get this dealt with.

A similar incident happened to me. Believe it or not my name was misspelled 2 times. The way my first name is spelled is totally different from anyone else. I was like come on are you friggin kidding me. They don't care. Going through the process of proving it isn't you is really hard. You spend so much time fighting it its like I might as well pay it. My friend fought for some time and they made him pay a small portion and they dismissed the rest. I hope you have luck in fighting that. identity theft sucks. Good luck. You were living there and you used the electricity also, why should she be the only one paying the bills? It sounds like she could use some help in the financial dept. Pay it and don't say another word about it. How much did she spend to raise you? It's part of growing up, life isn't always fair.
