Why arent the people on social security and ssi not getting a rebate check?

The employed and ones filing income taxes are living better than those on social security and SSI > once we pay our bills we have nothing left, the living conditions out weight our check each month . one month we pay the electric , and cant pay the gas bill until the next month comes around . most of us are only eligibile for 10.00 a month in food stamps , people who work only have to wait 5 days to get a paycheck , we gotta wait until 30 days to get another check , every january the social security raises maybe 10,00 food, rent , and utilities outweight the check , many of us are starving month by month , and Social security gives us an extra 10.00 saying due to the cost of living going up . We derserve a rebate check to . I hope someone stronger than me after eating a bowl of soup for supper, files a lawsuit against this country , we are not being treated as equal , all these young people will waste this money they will be getting at Mcdonalds and wallmart buying cds of rap

The proposed rebate is an advance or rebate toward taxes paid for the 2008 tax year. Since SSI is a welfare program for those who are disabled but who have not worked long enough to qualify for SSDI (and who have little assets), those people will probably not be paying any taxes.

Those on SSDI will probably also not owe any taxes due to low income.

If someone doesn't work and won't pay any taxes for the 2008 tax year, they won't be eligible for the rebate. You've got to pay taxes to be eligible for the rebate.

People on ssi do not file tax returns, so how is it they would be entitled to a tax rebate?

because were taking care of those bills for you

the rebate is just that, a REBATE on taxes already paid. you don't pay taxes, therefore you don't get tax money back. sorry, but you should have planned better for retirement than relying on social insecurity. saving is hard, i know, but choices are choices.

I agree with you and I think it sick that you have to be well off to get a rebate check!

Because these rebates will have to be declared as income on next years taxes and they make to little to file a tax return .

Look I work, and I don't have money left over after paying my bills either. There are plenty of people in the same conditions as you but they work. People on Social Security don't file taxes...

Maybe if you paid taxes, you could get a refund of what you paid, but you don't so you wont.

If you're on SSI u dont NEED a rebate check! you're not the one working for your money other ppl r i cant believe youre actually complaining about not getting one...its basically like a reward 4 ppl that actually WORK!

Rebate means getting back some of what you already paid in.... those on Social Security, retired, unemployed, or not working for income for what ever reason *DID NOT* pay anything to get a rebate for......

Because Bush sucks! They are the people that really need the extra $. To all those people who said because they didn't pay in - of course they did or they wouldn't be getting benefits!

Whoa, seems to be a lot of hostility towards people on social security and SSI. I can understand the SSI part, as when I was working and paying all those Federal income taxes, Medicare taxes, etc., I resented the fact that some people on SSI were defrauding the government just to get SSI.

But, social security is tax that you pay into all your life until you are ready to retire. Under some circumstances, your SS and income may be such after retirement that you have to pay tax on the SS, too. SS is a taxable income for retired people. Shouldn't be, but it is. Fortunately and more unfortunately, the amount of SS received after retirement is not enough for most people to meet having to file taxes on their SS.

SS also never keeps up with the cost of living. It is around 2.3% every years which is far behind the actual COLA.

Our SS funds are being used to borrow from, to pay for benefits to people who have never paid into the SS system. We are being penalized as retired hard workers who have paid into the "system" by the government removing a percentage out of our paychecks every paycheck!

I hope you do have enough to retire on as cost of living is going up and the amount of SS you'll receive is going down. When SS was first started, there were about 12 workers paying in for everyone retired. Now it is less than one paying in because of all the benefits the governments throws out to those who have not paid into the "system".

The rebate is NOT for those who paid income tax. It is the government's way to generate the economy which is teetering on the brink of recession. It was debated who, how, etc., over and over about the distribution of the "rebate". This, unfortunately, is the way the government voted to distribute the rebate and it will penalize those who need it the most.

You are wrong, you arent paying our bills. I am 100% disabled, had a bone marrow transplant this past summer. While yes, you do pay my med bills, I receive less than 30$ in food stamps, and NO assistance on any utilities, and NO living assitance. Most disabled people dont. Thats the welfare people while in most cases they dont need it. I know there are legitamitly people that do need welfare, but I know personally far too many people who take advantage of it.

Again, our system is set up to give everything to the people that dont need it and nothing to the people that do. Yeah, sure, that rebate means you may be able to get a new comp or new tv or pay off the living room suit you just bought that cost a few thou. For me, (yes, i know I dont file taxes and therefore dont get a rebate. Though, that is NOT true of everyone on disability. There are several people on disbibility that still work to a limited extent and do infact file taxes. Their disability payments slide based on their income), that money would mean being able to eat something healthier than romain noodles 7 days a week. That money would mean not that I just dont have to let a bill slide, but that I would actually be able *to* heat and cool my house. As it stands now, I cant. That money would mean being able to afford a decent place rather than this really old peice of crap that has so much mold it is effecting my health. That money would mean being able to afford the gas to actually drive to the grocery store and school rather than bumming rides from my neighbors or friends that live near by.

That money would mean I wouldnt be mooching my neighbors wireless internet right now. That money would mean I would be able to pay for school myself, rather than the student loans I am taking out that I wont be able to pay on when the time comes. That money would mean I could get all the delinquint med bills paid (medicaid not medicare pay everything. Trust me. My med bills are ruining my credit to the point that I may never be able to buy a house, and I fail most renters credit checks. They are the ONLY thing neg on my credit report... I am only 24.

That money would mean I would be able to make the needed repairs to my car. Its on its last leg and as it stands now, I dont have the money to fix it. I have no idea whats gonna happen when it dies.

That money would mean that my living room furniture may be something more than hand me down whicker porch furniture that is about 5 years old and falling apart. I cant afford even basic cable.

While disability in and of it self supports people who are trying to work, and I could work some if my doc filled out a form. But medicaid does care. I cant work more than 10 hours a week at the pay rate I would be looking at and keep my medical insurance. I am on Medicare as well, but they have outrageous copays on the medication. Medicaid wont pay my copays for the hosp and doc apts, but they just keep sending it to collections. They havnt tried yet, but they can refuse to treat me til I pay up. Medicaid does however, pay my medication copays. If I had medicare only, my monthly meds would be upwardof 2000+ per month. I cant even have that much go through my checking account to meet all the financial requirements, much less pay that much if I had to. With medicaid I pay about 50 per month.

No, we shouldnt get a tax rebate if we dont file taxes, but I think the people who are on disability deserve and could use the money a lot more than the people who are getting it.

this is a commit to those who state that people on social security don't pay taxes well you wrong these people paid taxes all their life and now are penalize because they are retired. And you the person who said that they were paying for the people on social security your dead wrong the money they receive is money they paid in all their working life. And finally to the one that said that they work and are in the same shape as a person on SS how do you figure this unless you get paid only once a month you are in no way in the same shape these people have to make money last month to month not by weekly
