What does Security Clearance mean in a Resume Bulider?

My friend is japanese, and shes applying for a job. It askes her for her security clearance. I just want to make sure what it is. Thanks!

If you've previously been granted a security clearance, you mention it on your resume because it increases the possibility that you can be granted one for the new job, if it requires it.

If you've never been granted a security clearance, you leave it blank.

Actually, in the 80's when we were all in the defense biz in Silicon Valley, I was told to never declare my clearance level. That was part of the secret. It always made it frustrating because you could not talk about the cool tech you built.

Some jobs in engineering, technology, government, or other classified work require a security clearance. There is a procedure to go through to get it; typically an employer will pay for it; it can cost about $5000 for a "secret" clearance and $10, 000 for "top secret". It will involve filling out a great deal of paperwork and having one or more Department of Defense briefings about regulations such as procedures to follow when dealing on the job with persons of foreign background, etc.
It may be hard for your non-US citizen friend to obtain a clearance; I'm not sure of the regulations. Don't put it on the resume unless she really has been granted security clearance status.

If she doesn't know what a security clearance is, she doesn't have one, and should leave that section blank.
