Can you collect social security benefits if your father dies and has not claimed paternity of you? |
Someone told me that a father doesn't have to claim paternity for a child to collect social security if the father is dead. This became a big argument between us. Can someone help settle this one for me? It's possible. I know someone whose husband died about a month before their child was born. She was able to get Survivor's benefits for the child. This is worth a phone call to the nearest SSA office. get a job - maybe that is why he never claimed you - free loader You can collect on his record if you can prove his paternity. If you have a birth certificate with his name listed as your father, then I believe that is enough to file under his record. |
