Anyone ever purchased their own home security system (burglar alarms, etc)?

It is SO expensive to purchase equipment and then pay a company to monitor your home every month. I've seen some items on EBAY that may work, and there were some other websites selling electronic home security systems, but I had never heard of them before and have no idea whether they are legit.

If you have your own system, would you please let me know where you bought it, how much you paid for it, and whether you are pleased with it or not?

Thanks!

I would defenitely stick with an accredited company in your area. Who knows who this is that is selling you the system online, for all you know, they guy/gal could be using it as a scam to be able to gain entry into your home after you install the system. Think about it, they have your address to ship to, can likely monitor when you are activating and deactivating the alarm (hence home or not) and could have info on how to disable the system.

The cost of the alarm system can easily be offset by the reduction you would receive in your monthly insurance premiums (most insurance places offer reductions if you have a system) plus an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Or you could get the same system I have. It is about 80lbs with four legs and a loud bark..it costs me about 30$ a month in food, plus the bonus of love and affection that comes with a dog....lol.

I sold Home Security Systems and by and large, they are a rip off. Unless you pay to have a monitored, hard wired system to all entry points you're just not getting what your paying for. I agree with elysialaw above: get a dog. Also, you could get a gun and learn how to use it. No fear!

Most of the stand-alone type security systems that are like appliances and you just plug into the wall are junk and are not worth buying.

You can buy the same equipment that professional alarm installers use from a variety of on-line stores, but a certain amount of skill is required to install it. If you have experience in doing your own electrical work around the house, then you can probably install your own alarm system. By doing this, you might save 30% or 40% over what it would cost to have a system professionally installed.

However, if you don't have any experience with electrical work, you would probably be better off hiring a professional.
