Researching my deceased fathers outsinding monies.....?

My father passed away 5 years ago. There was money left to my brothers and I when he passed. I was contacted by a company who said they were aware of monies that were in accounts. They want a finders fee, my father was in the service and had various accounts and securities. Does anyone kow how I can go about reserching this without paying a portion to a company?

When administering estates, we used to use the decedent's prior federal income tax returns to find out their sources of reported incomes. If you find out a report of income in the form of dividends, interest, mutual funds, rental income, etc., it is relatively easy to locate the payer of that income.

You may also want to contact the Unclaimed Property Office (Office of Escheats) in your father's state of residence. In the state of Pennsylvania, inactive bank accounts and amounts representing uncashed checks are sent to the Unclaimed Property Office. You can search the Pennsylvania Unclaimed Property database here: http://www.patreasury.org/search.htm

Use the following website to find out how to contact Unclaimed Property Offices of all of the states and some Canadian provinces: http://www.treasurer.state.ne.us/ie/othe...

It is free to use the governmental services.

Look at his tax returns if you have access to them. If he reports interest or dividends he has an account at each institution.

they are trying to fool you

don't pay them a penny, do everything yourself
