Does any one know the renter's security laws?

I was watching TV, and I heard that if there is an amount on one's security that one was wrongfully withheld from them then the person is entitled to twice or three times the amount owed. Does anyone know if that is true? And if it is true does anyone know what the law it would be under?

Generally speaking, landlord-tenant issues are a matter of state law. Without knowing what state you live, it's impossible for anyone here to give you any substantive advice.

Your best bet will be to consult the law in your state to determine the landlord's obligation to return a security deposit.

For reasons that would take too long to explain here, NY tenant law can actually get quite complicated depending on the facts. If you have a serious issue that can't be answered by that guide, I strongly suggest you contact an attorney.
