What happens to someone who is on social security that gets married? |
I have rheumatoid arthritis and receive social security(medicare) and an SSI payment. Also I have a PA access card. It shouldn't make any difference whether you get married or not. Unless your husband has a really good insurance policy and job. I guess you could get updated. If that was the case for me, I wouldn't get married and loose my funds. Your marriage could go sour in a year and you would have a hard time getting your funds back. I think they might reduce your check based on how much your husband makes. Nothing happens, nothing changes, no matter how much you draw each month. If your name and address doesn't change, do nothing. If you use your husband's name and you will be living at a new location, call the Social Security Administration and give them your new name and address. When you get married, you should receive a packet of info with a name change form so that you can get a Social Security card with your new last name on it. Your house hold income will be adjusted. They could cut into your funds, or maybe even increase them. They will recheck your house hold income and adjust it. You might get cut off, if there is too much income coming into the house hold. I don't think it really matters. I see no difference. I had a boyfriend that was on SSI for a year, and they took him off because of where he was living. It was to much house hold income. In order to receive funds there are limits to what assets you can have, and I am sure that you know this. There is a copay to Medicare and Medicaid, but it will put you into a different care situation like a HMO. I wouldn't get married unless I was prepared to loose all my funding. If you go up to your case worker, or to the Social Security Office asking questions, that could get them to start checking up on you too. Your going to have to be real careful in what your doing and saying up there. You know they don't want anybody drawing Social Security nowadays with the present Government in power. i dodnt know what happens about that i would assume they lose it You don't say whether you are receiving benefits based on your earnings history or on a former spouse's history. If your history, benefits that are not means-tested should not change. The best advice is to contact your state's department on aging, or the federal Administration on Aging www.aoa.gov and/or Social Security www.socialsecurity.gov or 800-772-1213 |
