How can a 15 year old get Social Security benifits from her deceased mother?

Ok so heres the deal. My 15 year old friend's mother died 7 months ago, her fathers a deadbeat and doesn't care about her. I was told that she could get benifits from her mother's social security. How would we do that? And how would it work?

She should contact the local Social Security office to apply. Here is the information from their website:

"You should apply for survivors benefits promptly because, in some cases, benefits will be paid from the time you apply and not from the time the worker died.

You can apply by telephone or at any Social Security office. We will need certain information, but do not delay applying if you do not have everything. We will help you get what you need. We need either original documents or copies certified by the agency that issued them.

The information we need includes:

Proof of death鈥攅ither from a funeral home or death certificate;
Your Social Security number, as well as the deceased worker鈥檚;
Your birth certificate;
Dependent children鈥檚 Social Security numbers, if available, and birth certificates;
Deceased worker鈥檚 W-2 forms or federal self-employment tax return for the most recent year; and
The name of your bank and your account number so your benefits can be deposited directly into your account. "

It also states that children receive 75% of the worker's benefit.

SHE can't get benefits, because she's a minor. But her custodial parent or legal guardian can.
